Thai gym terms.

Fifteen phrases cover most gym check-ins, pad rounds, and price questions in Pattaya. Romanized for field use — a training survival sheet, not a language course.

You do not need fluent Thai to train in Pattaya — many camps run in English — but fifteen phrases change awkward gym moments into smooth ones. This is a field reference for check-in, Muay Thai class, prices, directions, and polite closings. Romanization follows common gym pronunciation, not perfect RTGS.

First time training? Pair with Muay Thai for beginners and English-speaking camps. Long-stay? See training & visa guide.

FAQ

Do I need Thai to train at Fairtex or Sityodtong?

No for daily class — English is common. Thai helps for immigration, market food, and taxi drivers. English-speaking camps list.

What should I say on my first day?

"Sawatdee khrap/kha" + "train dai mai" + "long krang raek" (first time). Smile — Pattaya gym culture is welcoming if you are respectful.

How do I say I want light sparring only?

"Mai spar" or "bao bao" with hands up smiling. Non-negotiable for beginners.

Where can I learn more Thai for daily life?

Pronunciation tips that actually help in gyms

Thai is tonal — the same romanization can mean different words. In practice, gym staff forgive tone errors if you are polite. Khrap (male) and kha (female) sentence endings signal respect; use them after price questions and thank-yous. Point at equipment while speaking — ni (this) + noun beats perfect grammar.

Numbers for prices and rounds

ThaiRomanizationNumber
หนึ่งneung1
สองsong2
สามsaam3
สิบsip10
ยี่สิบyee sip20
ห้าร้อยhaa roi500
หนึ่งพันneung phan1,000

Combine: ra kha tao rai (how much?) + point at the membership sign. Write the number they show on your phone calculator if audio fails.

When English is faster

Tier-A tourist camps (Fairtex, Kombat, Venum) run class in English. Street gyms (WKO, Sor Klinmee) mix Thai instructions with gesture — your phrase sheet still helps for front-desk pricing and taxi directions. If a coach switches to Thai mid-round, nod and mirror — do not stop the line to ask for translation unless safety is at stake.

Cultural mistakes to avoid

  • Do not touch a trainer's head or point feet at Buddha images in gym shrines.
  • Remove shoes before entering some traditional gym office areas — watch locals.
  • Do not film other students without permission — especially women and children.
  • Tip is not mandatory; small cold drinks for pad holders on long sessions are appreciated.

Emergency phrases

ThaiRomanizationUse
เจ็บjepIt hurts (point to body part)
พอแล้วphor laewEnough / stop
ช้าๆchaa chaaSlow down
เรียกหมอriak morCall a doctor

Recording phrases on your phone

Save audio clips from Google Translate for sawatdee, ra kha tao rai, and mai spar — play at the desk if nerves hit. Coaches appreciate effort even if tones are wrong. LINE is how many gyms confirm class times — ask LINE dai mai (do you have LINE?) at reception.

Reading gym whiteboards

Whiteboards list wan (day), chuang (round), and trainer names in Thai script. Photograph the board and translate slowly — schedule changes happen when fighters book stadium bouts. Holiday closures are often posted only in Thai — point and ask pit mai (closed?) if the gate is locked.

Learn mai pen rai (no worries) — it defuses awkward moments when you miss a combo or block a kick accidentally. Gyms run on patience for foreigners who show respect.

Print this page or save offline — Bali Hai and east camps have weak signal in locker rooms where you need phrases most.

Share with training partners — two people practicing khop khun and bao bao before sparring week makes gym culture smoother for everyone.
